Your data is on your phone, so the app does not need the internet to work. Almost all of Vitals runs with the radio off.
Works with no connection
- Searching the more than 12,000 built-in foods and logging them by weight
- Logging food by hand, from a favorite, or from a meal you prepped
- Your whole food history, your day totals, and the 23 vitamins and minerals
- Every workout: starting a routine, logging sets, the rest timer, saving it
- Logging a past workout, cardio, sauna or cold session
- All 308 exercises and 128 stretches, with their instructions and muscle charts
- Your supplement list, doses, and vial counts
- Water and your bottles, including the widgets and Siri
- Bodyweight, check-ins, fasting, targets, and your history
- Recovery, insights and gut and mood patterns, all worked out on the phone
- Apple Health syncing, which happens on the device
Needs a connection
- The AI features: describing, saying or photographing a meal, saved meals from words or a photo, reading a label (with no connection, a label photo is read on the phone instead), checking a claim, importing a workout from a screenshot, and Ask your data
- Scanning a new barcode, which looks the product up in a public food database. A product you checked before opens with no connection.
- Searching the research literature, including the search behind a claim check
- Weather for outdoor sessions and today's UV and rain, from Weather
These need a connection because the answer is not on your phone. Everything else is.
If the connection drops
Nothing is lost. A workout in progress is stored on the device as you go, so losing signal in a basement gym, on a plane, or on a trail does nothing to it. Food you have logged is already saved. There is no sync to fail. A meal you sent for analysis waits on the phone and is sent when the connection comes back.
If an AI request fails, you are told, and you can still log the food by hand.
Your data is on the phone
There is no account and no server holding your log. That is why the app works offline at all, and it is the same reason your log is yours. The privacy receipt lists every network call the app can make and what each one sends.
